Oncologist
Duties & responsibilities: A physician who specializes
in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. They have the role to explain the
cancer diagnosis and the meaning of the disease stage to the patient; discuss
various treatment options; recommend the best course of treatment; deliver
optimal care; and improve quality of life both through curative therapy and
palliative care with pain and symptom management.
Salary: $217,856
Education: Completion of a bachelor's degree program,
particularly one that includes coursework in the biological and chemical
sciences, is the first step in becoming an oncologist. Admission to an accredited
school is next, a competitive and selective process that typically requires a
passing score on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).
Reflection: Being an Oncologist is something I would not
like doing. How can you tell another human being they have cancer and they can
die from it? Cancer to me is a sensitive subject and really sad I would not
like to have to experience that. Of course oncologist are doing their job in
finding treatments and letting the individual know they have cancer but, to me I’m
not comfortable in doing that. The job does pay good, but I would want to do
something more lenient and not so heavy.
